Chief of Internal Medicine
We are seeking an experienced Chief of Internal Medicine to lead the Internal Medicine Department at Policlinico San Donato branch in Najaf, Iraq. The Head of Department (HoD) will be responsible for providing strategic leadership, overseeing clinical activities, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care. This leadership role requires exceptional clinical expertise, strong management skills, and the ability to foster collaboration among multidisciplinary teams to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
Departmental Leadership:
- Lead the Internal Medicine Department, developing and implementing strategic plans that align with the hospital’s goals and objectives.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the department, ensuring the delivery of high-quality medical care in accordance with evidence-based practices and international standards.
- Develop and maintain policies, protocols, and procedures for the department, ensuring they are in line with best practices and compliant with local healthcare regulations.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to internal medicine physicians, residents, and other clinical staff, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment.
- Ensure that all departmental activities are aligned with the hospital’s mission of providing patient-centered care, safety, and high clinical standards.
Clinical and Patient Care:
- Oversee the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with a wide range of complex medical conditions, ensuring a high standard of care is maintained across the department.
- Ensure that patient care is delivered in a safe, compassionate, and culturally sensitive manner, with a focus on achieving the best possible outcomes for patients.
- Lead the department in multidisciplinary case discussions and patient management meetings, collaborating with other specialties such as cardiology, surgery, and oncology to deliver comprehensive care.
- Monitor patient outcomes and implement quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and clinical effectiveness within the department.
- Provide expert consultation and support to other departments as needed, contributing to hospital-wide patient care and decision-making processes.
Team Management and Development:
- Train, and mentor physicians, residents, and other healthcare professionals in the Internal Medicine Department, ensuring that they are equipped with the skills and knowledge to provide high-quality care.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations for staff, identifying areas for improvement and providing opportunities for professional development and continued education.
- Foster a positive, collaborative work environment that promotes teamwork, accountability, and a commitment to excellence.
- Lead departmental meetings and engage staff in discussions about clinical challenges, innovative practices, and patient care strategies.
Compliance and Quality Assurance:
- Ensure that all clinical activities and patient care are compliant with local regulations, accreditation standards, and international healthcare best practices.
- Lead quality improvement initiatives within the department, including audits, clinical reviews, and patient safety programs to continuously enhance care delivery.
- Oversee risk management and ensure that protocols are in place to mitigate risks associated with clinical activities and patient care.
- Ensure the department adheres to infection control guidelines, medication safety practices, and other key quality standards.
Collaboration and Multidisciplinary Care:
- Foster collaboration with other medical and surgical departments, ensuring that internal medicine is integrated into a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
- Represent the department in hospital-wide committees and leadership meetings, providing input on policies, clinical protocols, and strategic decisions that affect the hospital as a whole.
- Work closely with nursing, pharmacy, laboratory, and radiology departments to ensure that internal medicine patients receive timely and coordinated care.
Research and Education:
- Promote and encourage participation in clinical research, fostering an environment that supports the advancement of medical knowledge and innovation in internal medicine.
- Oversee the education and training programs for residents, medical students, and junior doctors within the department, ensuring high standards of medical education and clinical training.
- Stay current with the latest advancements in internal medicine, integrating new research and developments into clinical practice within the department.
Qualifications:
- Medical degree with specialization in Internal Medicine (Board certification or equivalent).
- At least 10 years of clinical experience in Internal Medicine, with a minimum of 3-5 years in a leadership or senior clinical role.
- Proven experience in managing a multidisciplinary medical team and leading clinical services in a hospital setting.
- Strong knowledge of clinical protocols, patient safety initiatives, and healthcare regulations in internal medicine.
Preferred Skills:
- Fluency in both Arabic and English (speaking, reading, and writing) is essential for effective communication with staff, patients, and external stakeholders.
- Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to mentor, motivate, and lead a diverse clinical team.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, particularly in the management of complex medical cases and operational challenges.
